WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A TREE
Take a closer look at your trees and shrubs before purchasing from the nursery or on delivery.
BARE ROOT TREE
A bare root tree is a plant that has been dug from the ground when they are dormant and their roots are free of soil. Check they have been packed in moist material. Look for small but abundant root growth that is fibrous and a healthy colour.
BALLED & BURLAPPED TREE (B&B)
A B&B tree has a firm soil ball with the trunk securely tied. Do not accept a plant that has a broken “ball” or circling roots at the base of the trunk. Always carry B&B plants by the soil ball, not the trunk, stems or branches.
CONTAINER-GROWN TREE
Avoid trees or shrubs that are “root-bound” in the tub. Roots circulating around the edge of the container may become circling roots. (Cut any circling roots when planting.) Because of this, B&B trees are generally preferred for large trees. Always remove can, basket or pot when planting.
